Below: Type 4 Bus Motor from the top rear. Note: a fuel-injected 1978 motor is shown.
Type 4 motors were used in 1972-1979 Buses. 1972-1974 motors had basically the same parts, 1975-1978 were similar to each other and 1979 had an injected motor like the 1975-1978 motor, but had similar exhaust and engine tin parts to the 1972-1974 motors.

1972-1974 & 1979 VW Bus Motors.
'72-'74 and '79 VW Buses have similar exhaust, engine tin, heater boxes and heat tubes, although there are some differences. The '72-'74 Buses were carbureted whereas the 1979 Buses were fuel injected. Because of that the fuel injected '79 Bus did not have the pre-heat duct on the front right of the motor. Also the '79 heater boxes have the air-cooled Vanagon style, square exhaust ports, so they are different from the '72-'74 heater boxes and are one-year-only items.

- 72-74 Bus Lower Right Warm Air Duct Tin. It also works for 79 Bus and 80-83 Air-Cooled Vanagon, although the 72-74 tin has one extra hole
